John Kendall Planck

John Kendall “Ken” Planck, 94, of Concord, passed away Sunday morning, August 23, 2020, at his home, following a period of declining health.

Born February 23, 1926, in St. Petersburg, Florida, Ken was a son of the late John E. and Eva Button Planck.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Ruth Sarah Becker Planck, and his second wife of 15 years, Stella Avis Lomas Planck; and a step daughter, Diane Viera.

Ken began working during his high school years, where he had various jobs. During his junior year, he volunteered and was accepted as a Cadet in the US Army Air Force. Serving during the latter part of WWII, Ken became a civilian again in October of 1945.  He married Ruth Becker in 1947, and began his nearly 40 year career with IBM in 1948. Ken and Ruth were blessed with a son, William, in September of 1949. Ruth passed away in 2000.  He later met and married Stella Lomas, who passed away in 2015.  Mr. Planck was a member of Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church and was an avid camper and loved “RVing” all over the country.  He was a member of the Good Sam Camping Club, and was able to visit 49 states. He had also been honored to participate in the Honor Flight program, allowing veterans to visit the memorials in Washington, D.C.  A loving and devoted father, brother, grandfather and friend of many, Mr. Planck will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Family members include his son, William “Will’ Planck; his brother, Richard Planck (Dodie); his step children, Susan Machado (Charles) and David Lomas (Christine); step son-in-law, Harry Viera; 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and extended family members.

A memorial funeral service to remember and celebrate Mr. Planck’s life will be held at a later date.
