Obituary: John Van Rushing, 76, of Kannapolis passed away on Monday, July 7, 2014 at his home after several years of declining health. He was born May 14, 1938 in Union County, the son of the late Iven and Lela Medlin Rushing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Styers Rushing on September 6, 2005 and his brother, Robert Rushing. John retired from Cannon Mills due to disability after 35 years as a fixer at Plant 1 #6 Weave Room. He was a lifelong member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church where he was very active in numerous church activities. He also held many church positions throughout his lifetime. After he retired, John spent most of his time helping other people with small tasks such as running errands , visiting, etc. just to name a few. He was a true servant of God. He enjoyed cars, especially Mustangs and lawn mowers. John was also a member of the Kannapolis Vagabonds. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Franklin Heights Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Jim Grigg. The family will receive friends prior from 5 to 7 PM at the church. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday at Carolina Memorial Park. He is survived by two daughters, Gwyn McMahan of Kannapolis, Rita Teal and husband, Bobby Teal Jr., of Kannapolis, three grandchildren, Austin Teal, Colby Teal, Madison McMahan, brother, H.B. Rushing and wife, Maxine of Kannapolis his sister, Mae Stegall of Kannapolis and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Franklin Heights Building for Generations Fund and/or Franklin Heights Boy Scout Troop 87, 526 Wright Ave, Kannapolis, NC 28083.
