Obituary: John Arthur Sweeney II May 6, 1961 - May 2, 2015 KANNAPOLIS - John Arthur Sweeney II, of Kannapolis, NC passed away on May 2, 2015. John was born on May 6, 1961 to John Arthur Sweeney I (deceased) and Mary Beth (Williams) Johnson. John was born in Tucson, Arizona and raised in Whittier, California. After high school, John joined the Army and trained as a medic in Berchtesgaden, Germany. The post was high in the German Alps where military, from all over the world, trained for Alpine fighting, ski patrol and rescue. The post provided John the perfect place to pursue his love of skiing, photography and travel. He traveled all over Europe on his leaves. He met Kim Boyel there and she joined him after he was discharged in Whittier. There they started a family, they had two daughters, Jennifer and Heather. John's work transferred him to Charlotte, North Carolina and the family settled there. He worked for Phillip Morris until lung cancer ended his life. In the last few years, as John battled lung cancer, he was supported at home by his mother Mary and daughter Jennifer. Together they provided John with a home, love and support. He'll be remembered by his friends for his sense of humor, love of a good time and willingness to lend a hand to someone in need. John is survived by his mother Mary Johnson of Kannapolis, NC; daughters Jennifer Sweeney of Kannapolis and Heather Sweeney of Santa Cruz, CA.; sisters Elizabeth Sweeney of Framingham, MA and Caroline Lopez of Pomona, CA; brother George Sweeney of Whittier, CA; his step-mother Georgine Sweeney of Whittier, CA; and his beloved dog, Tasha. The memorial service will be held Saturday, June 6th, at Whitley's Funeral Home Annex Chapel Kannapolis, NC starting at 3 PM and ending at 6 PM.
