Obituary: Mooresville - Mr .Joseph Clay Johnston, 91, of Mooresville, formerly of Kannapolis died May 10, 2009. Death was unexpected. He was born March 30, 1918 in Wilkes County, NC son of the late Joseph Marlow and Nettie Livingston Johnston. He moved to Kannapolis in the 1930's and began his career at Cannon Mills, retiring as Superintendent of Roberta Mills. He was also instrumental during the establishment of Plant #15.He was a member of Allen-Graham Masonic Lodge #695 where he had served as chaplain for several years. He also enjoyed woodworking and gardening. He also was a veteran of the US Navy serving during WW2 in Norfolk, Va. in the navy ship service store. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 18, 2009 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Dr. Tom Cabaniss. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday 10:00-11:00 AM prior to services. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park with Masonic graveside rites conducted by Allen-Graham Lodge. He is survived by his wife: Virginia Armstrong Johnston of Kannapolis, whom he married June 6, 1941. Two Daughters: Cynthia Tyler and Husband Lisle of Aiken , SC. Patti Bruce and husband Steve of Mooresville. Four grandchildren: James Sterling Parks Reid, Jr. (Drew) of Aiken , SC, Gregory Clayton Reid of Savannah, Ga., Tyler Matthew Bruce and Alison Leigh Bruce both of Mooresville. Four Great Grandchildren: Allison Reid of New Ellenton, SC, Grant Cooper Reid of Savannah, Addison McKenzie Reed of Savannah and Mallory Reed of Ellenton, SC.
