Obituary: Joseph Earl Orland, Jr., 91, of Kannapolis passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2012 at CMC-NorthEast. He was born July 12, 1921 in Newark, NJ, the son of the late Joseph Earl Orland Sr. and Zeta Scott Orland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Pressly Orland on May 17, 2012. He was a graduate of JW Cannon High School and NC State College. He retired from Cannon Mills where he was Sr. Vice-President of Manufacturing. He was a US Army officer serving during WW II in the Pacific Theater. He was a retired Lt. Colonel with the NC National Guard and was awarded the NC Distinguished Service Medal. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Concord and the former St. James Episcopal in Kannapolis where he had been former Sr. and Jr. Warden, Sunday school teacher, Lay Reader, Finance Committee member, and volunteer business manager. He was former chairman of the Cabarrus County School Board and former President of the NC Central Council of Boy Scouts where he was awarded the Silver Beaver. He was a Mason. He was also a member of the American Legion Beaver-Pittman Post 115 where he was past commander and member of the 40 & 8. He was involved with the former Royal Oaks Optimist Club as well as a volunteer tutor with the Kannapolis City Middle School. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at All Saints Episcopal Church, Concord, NC . The family will receive friends following the service in the Parrish Hall. He is survived by two daughters, Laura Orland Murdoch (Haynes ) of Salisbury and Scotty Orland Martin (Freddie) of Raleigh, five grandchildren, Joe and Seth Murdoch, Alice Murdoch Shannon (Gordy), Jake and Anna Martin and two sisters, Frances Orland Milem (Ray) of Kannapolis and Patricia Orland Jones (L.D.) of China Grove.
