Obituary: Josephine Gragg Fender, age 93, of Concord died at the Carriage House of Caremoor Retirement Center in Kannapolis on August 1, 2014. She was born February 16, 1921 in Buncombe Co., NC, the daughter of the late Melvin and Arra Lewis Gragg. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Fate Fender, her infant twins, six sisters; Vernice, Eugenia, Bessie, Ally, Rose and Eveline; three brothers, George, Otis, and Frank and also, by several nephews and nieces. Josephine was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church, Concord, NC and a former member of Swannanoa Free Will Baptist Church where she served many years as a Senior Ladies Sunday School Class teacher. She had retired as an assistant dietician with Highland Farms Retirement Community in Black Mountain, NC. She is survived by her son, Harold Fender and wife, Wanda along with two granddaughters, Cheryl Bell and husband, Dwayne and Joyce Hendry and husband, John. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. A funeral service will be held at 7p.m., Monday, August 4th at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted locally by Rev. Michael Waters. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 before the service. Another funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, Aug. 5th at Swannanoa Free Will Baptist Church, Swannanoa, NC with Rev. Jack Ward and Rev. Michael Waters officiating. Her body will lie in state from 11-12:00 prior to the service there and the family will receive friends at that time also. Burial will follow at Patton Cemetery. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of the Carriage House of Caremoor and also to the Shut-in-Ministry of Parkwood Baptist Church.
