Obituary: Kannapolis, NC- Joy Lovejoy McGill, age 91, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, NC after a period of declining health. She was born September 11, 1924 in Memphis, TN, the last of seven children to Dr. W.H. Lovejoy and Bernice Swearengen Lovejoy. Joy was a graduate of South Side High School, Memphis, TN, attended the University of Mississippi, and graduated with a B.S. degree in Library Science from Appalachian State University in 1975. She had lived in California prior to coming to Kannapolis. She lived in Kannapolis from 1964 to 1991 and later Charlotte, NC. Joy retired as Librarian at Enochville Elementary School in 1986. Prior to that time she was employed by Kannapolis City Schools. Joy was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, NC where she had served as president of the Exodus Sunday School Class, former president of the United Methodist Women, a financial secretary of the church, and active in the J.L. Smith Sunday School Class, the Vera Williams Circle, and active in various phases of church activities over the years. Joy was also active at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC where she had been active as president of the Alice Ranson Sunday School Class, and had served as treasurer of the Westminster Presbyterian Women when she was married to J. Henry McGill. Through those years she was on the board of directors of the McGill Rose Garden in Charlotte where she also volunteered, and earlier served on the board of the department of Social Services in Cabarrus County, NC. In addition to her parents Joy is preceded in death by her first husband, Glenn Porter, who died in 1969; her second husband, the Honorable Judge L. Frank Faggart in 1981; and J. Henry McGill in 2007; three brothers; and three sisters. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Kirk Tutterow. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 PM Tuesday at the church prior to the service. The family would like to thank Dr. Dawn Caviness and the staff of Cabarrus Family Medicine and her caregivers at Tucker Hospice House, Morningside Assisted Living, Universal Healthcare & Rehab, Avante of Concord, and CHS-NE for their dedication and care for our mother. Survivors include her two sons, Barry Glenn Porter & wife, Elaine of Kannapolis, NC and Allen Lovejoy Porter & wife, Cheryl of Jamestown, NC; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Allen Porter and Matthew Glenn Porter & wife, Hope; two great-grandchildren, Zoey and Dean Porter; and a number of nieces & nephews.
