Julian Lester Mcdowell

Obituary: Julian Lester McDowell, age 88, died at his home in Concord, North Carolina on Saturday, July 30, 2011 of natural causes.Born March 10, 1923 in Danville, Virginia, to Charlie and Rosa McDowell, he graduated after working as an electrical apprentice in the shipyards of Norfolk, Virginia. On June 3, 1966, he married Dorothy Greene McDowell.He retired as Regional Vice-President of American Bakeries (Merita) after 33 years of service.Julian was a charter member of Northwest Baptist Church where he taught the Adult Sunday School Class and served as a deacon. He was also a Mason. He was also a member of the Gideon's International West Chapter. He was a golf enthusiast and loved to play every chance he could get.Survivors include his wife, Dorothy McDowell, a sister, Doris Fowlkes of Fairfield, Ohio, four children, Gayle Capotosti of Concord, NC, Susie Hyatt of Lincolnton, NC, Don McDowell of Whitsett, NC and Craig Summerford of Effingham, SC, seven grandsons, four granddaughters, fourteen great-grandchildren, and one niece, Nancy Carey of Danville, VA. Julian was preceded in death by a son, Carl McDowell, brothers, Vernon McDowell and Ray McDowell, and sisters Mary Sellers and Elsie McDowell.Visitation will be held at Whitley's Funeral Home, Kannapolis, NC on Sunday, July 31st from 6 to 8 pm. Services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, August 1st at Northwest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Darren Sanders and Rev. J. Ed Hall, 3500 Trinity Church Road, Concord, NC. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to final rites. Burial will be at the Highland Burial Park, Danville, Virginia at 3:30 pm.
