Juneious "Jay" Walter Spears, Jr.

December 15, 1935 — December 15, 2024

Kannapolis

J. W. Spears, Jr. “Jay” was born on December 15, 1935, in Concord, NC, to parents, J. W. Spears, Sr. and Grace Whittington Spears, and he passed into Heaven on his birthday this year. Jay grew up on Winecoff St, Concord, where he and his family were charter members of Wil-Mar Park Baptist Church. In recent years he attended Flow Harris Presbyterian Church with his family. Jay was graduated from Winecoff High School in 1956. Playing football was a big part of his high school life. He helped Coach Jay M. Robinson to physically build the Winecoff High football stadium.

After high school, Jay joined the United States Air Force for four years. He worked briefly for Austin Electric in Charlotte wiring new schools and malls, but he soon joined the Concord Telephone Co. (now Windstream) where he retired after 30 years. He had many good friends and relatives there. He enjoyed taking technology classes to support the telephone PBX Department in Atlanta and in Chicago where there are, also, museums devoted to technology.

Jay, his father and brother, Craig, spent many happy hours fishing at “the point” at the Outer Banks where they were frequently joined by family and friends.

One of Jay’s greatest joys was giving away vegetables from the large garden which he worked with Tola Litaker. Jay’s Boston Terrier bulldog,” Precious,” learned to shuck corn with her paws and teeth. Jay enjoyed cooking “pit” prepared barbeque and frying fish with friends and family at the wood shop which he built in later life.

Those left to cherish his memory include the following: his wife of 60 years, Ruby Parker Spears; their son, David Christopher Spears (wife, Suzette); grandsons, Jon Scott of Siler City, and Tanner Scott of Concord; three nephews, Michael Spears (wife Janice) of Apex, Mark Newsome (wife Monica), Jeff Newsome (wife “Sissy”) of Kannapolis, and a devoted and much loved sister, Sylvia Spears Newsome. Jay has numerous loved great nieces, cousins, nephews and great grandchildren.

Jay Spears had a strong faith in God, a desire to spread the gospel, a strong love for his family, and he wanted to help his fellowman. Services will be conducted by Rev. Christine Conrath, former minister of Flow Harris Presbyterian Church, Concord, NC. A funeral and military rite will be conducted at Carolina Memorial Park, Masonic Section, on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 2:00pm in the afternoon. The family will, also, receive friends in the sanctuary of Flow Harris Presbyterian Church, 308 Winecoff School Rd., Concord, immediately after the grave side service, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm.

The family suggests that instead of flowers, Memorials can be made to the following: Flow Harris Presbyterian Church, 308 Winecoff School Rd., Concord, NC 28027; or Northwest Cabarrus High School Bible Teaching Association, P O Box 3242, Concord, NC 28025. The Spears family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the excellent care given to Jay by his primary care physician, Dr. Jan Van Ravestyn, Winecoff Family Practice and his staff; the entire Hospice nursing staff, especially his assigned nurse, Alison Asheedy, RN. A special joy for the Spears family has been the love, care and good humor of Angela Watson, RN, and her family: John (hsb.), and sons, Tyler and Grant (Mr. Football).
