Katie Laney Helms

Obituary: Kannapolis, NC- Katie Laney Helms, age 92, died Friday, March 1, 2013 at her home after a period of declining health. She was born December 3, 1920 in Union County, NC, the daughter of the late Malcom K. Laney and Henrietta G. Laney. She was a high school graduate of Indian Trail High School, Indian Trail, NC. Katie was homemaker for most of her life. She did however work with her husband in the watch repair business over the years. She was a fifty year-plus member of the former Royal Oaks Presbyterian Church that was in Kannapolis. She also was a member of the former "Optimrs" auxiliary of the Royal Oaks Optimist Club of which her husband was a member. She is remembered for her love of gardening with her husband and cooking/baking for her family. In addition her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin W. Helms, who passed on January 30, 2013; and nine siblings. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2013 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Marty Payton and Rev. Ron Bushey. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. Survivors include her son, Marvin Eugene Helms of Paulden, Arizona; one daughter, Kaye Moore & husband, Gene of Salisbury, NC; three grandchildren, Kim Barnhardt & husband, Rick of Rockwell, NC; Angie Wilson & husband, Todd of Salisbury, NC; and Marietta Abernathy & husband, James of Kannapolis, NC; and ten great-grandchildren.
