Obituary: Kyle R. Goodnight, Sr., 90, of Kannapolis died on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011 at The Brian Center of Concord. He had been in declining health for sometime and gravely ill for the previous 2 weeks. Kyle was born on October 20, 1920 in Cabarrus County to Walter Goodnight and Clara Deal Goodnight. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Gladys C. Goodnight, a brother Bus Goodnight, and sisters Margaret Roberts, Ida Boyd, Helen Ferguson and Marie Helms. Mr. Goodnight retired from Cannon Mills after 47 years also, he worked part time at Walmart in Kannapolis. He was a lifelong member of St. Johns United Church of Christ in Kannapolis. Kyle was a devoted husband and father. He loved the Lord Jesus and was a devoted Christian. Kyle was a veteran of World War II serving with Company B, 1258th Engineer Combat Battalion having fought in, "The Battle of the Bulge". He was proud to have received the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He is survived by his sons; Kyle R. Goodnight, Jr. and wife Joyce of Baltimore, Md. and Randall D. Goodnight and wife Dovie of Concord, and a daughter Judy G. Pittman of Serierville, TN. Grandsons; Kevin R. Goodnight of Baltimore Md., and Greg Franklin of Serierville, TN. Grand-daughters; Amy Elseroad of Baltimore, Md., Rhonda Franklin of Serierville, TN and Carla Furr of Kannapolis. He also had 9 great-grandchildren. The funeral for Mr. Goodnight will be held at 2P.M., Saturday, Feb. 26th, 2011 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Kannapolis conducted by Pastor Warren Cassidy. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park with Military Honors being conducted by the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis from 7-9:00 P.M., Friday, Feb. 25th. The family would like to thank the care givers that assisted in caring for Kyle while he was at The Brian Center. He always had a smile on his face regardless of the pain he was in.
