Lars Nystrom

Obituary: Lars Nystrom Lars was born on Christmas Day, 1951 in Visby, on the Isle of Gotland, Sweden to Erik and Ragna Nystrom (both deceased). His family moved to Dundee, Natal, South Africa when he was a boy and lived there for most of his youth. He returned to Sweden to finish his education and graduated from Lundsberg in Stockholm in 1972. He moved to the United States in November 1972 to pursue his dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Suzanne (Barger) of Charlotte, son Andrew Nystrom of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter, Elizabeth Benning ( Dennis) of Charlotte; sister, Anne Riddarstrom ( Sven) of Sweden; brother, Tom Ludwigsen of Norway and five cherished grandchildren Kendall, Lorelei, Jett, Hartleigh and Aspen. Lars and Suzanne met when they both worked for McDevitt and Street Construction Company; he as their corporate pilot and she as an accounting coordinator. Lars later went on to fly for Cannon Mills in Kannapolis before landing his dream job as a pilot for American Airlines where he retired as a Captain in 2006. Lars had two life-long dreams. He achieved his first by traveling the world, not only as an airline pilot, but also for pleasure. His second dream was to sail around the world. He accomplished the first step of that dream by buying a boat and working to make her seaworthy. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with dementia during this time, and the 'Tipsy Bliss' was never able to set sail. May Lars finally find his "fair winds and following seas". Services will be held at the Chapel at Whitley's Funeral Home, 1748 Dale Earnhardt Blvd., Kannapolis, NC at 11:30 am on Friday, January 25 with visitation and fellowship following in the annex. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you consider donating to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, 7845 Little Ave., Charlotte, NC 28226; The Alzheimer's Association; or a charity of your choice.
