Obituary: Lillian Smith Byrd, age 97, of Kannapolis died Friday, March 26, 2010 at Big Elm Nursing Center after a period of declining health. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel with Steve Short of Broad Street Church of Christ, Statesville officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in China Grove. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 PM Tuesday. Lillian was born April 30, 1912 in Ware Co. GA, the daughter of the late Irvin Plato Smith and the late Rachel Minchew Smith. She attended Broad Street Church of Christ in Statesville. Lillian retired in 1982 from Cannon Mills Co. where she worked as a hemmer in the Wash Cloth Dept. Lillian was preceded in death by 3 children and 8 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son, Guy Byrd and wife, Carol of Cleveland, NC and her daughter, Helen Dickson and husband, Ralph of Kannapolis. She is also survived by 2 sisters, Daisy Christy and Eula Mae Wensil, both of Kannapolis, and 6 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
