Obituary: Lillie Mae Grooms Cook, 76, formerly of 415 Oak Circle, Kannapolis went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011 from Magnolia Gardens in Spencer. She was born on January 2, 1935 in Chesterfield County, SC, the daughter of the late Tom and Marie Bittle Grooms. She was preceded in death by her husband, Coyte Sherrill Cook on Jan. 14, 2010. She was also preceded in death by two brothers Luther and Lonnie Grooms and a sister Onnie Black. Lillie Mae was employed at Cannon Mills where she worked at Plant 1 # 6 Weave Room for 20 years and then became a security guard at the mill through Wackenhut Security for 18 years before retiring in 2003. She was a member of Royal Oaks Baptist Church. She enjoyed helping people. She was a loving sitter to many children through the years in her home and also enjoyed helping work with and making the elderly feel special. Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Saturday, Feb. 5th at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Rev. Leon Smith. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 prior at Whitley's. Burial will be 1:00 PM Wednesday at the National Cemetery, Salisbury. She is survived by a brother, Neil Grooms of China Grove, a sister Ella Eagle of China Grove, her "granddaughter" Amber Leigh Smith of Kannapolis, a son Jimmie Arlen Lewis and wife Donna of Chapel Hill, 2 grandchildren Victor James Lewis and Meredith Elaine Lewis of Chapel Hill, and a number of nieces and nephews.
