Obituary: Evelyn Smith Ballard, age 80, left her loving family to go home and be with her Lord & Savior on Friday, December 25, 2009 on arrival at CMC-NorthEast, Concord, NC after several years of declining health. She was born February 7, 1929 in Cabarrus County, NC, the daughter of the late Harvey T. Smith and Wilma Hamilton Smith. She was a 1947 graduate of J.W. Cannon High School, Kannapolis, NC and later graduated from the former Wingate Junior College, Monroe, NC, and a 1952 graduate of Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, TN. She was employed as an elementary school teacher for 28 years having worked for Rowan County Schools, Kannapolis City Schools, and taught Bible in the public schools at the beginning of her teaching career. Prior to her declining health, she was an active member of Central Baptist Church, Kannapolis, NC where she was a charter member of the WMU, a Sunday School teacher, choir member, & active volunteering with various church activities. The funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, December 28, 2009 at Central Baptist Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Curtis C. Parker and Dr. R.J. Hammond. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Whitley's Funeral Home. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Howell T. Ballard; her sons, Tommy Ballard & wife, Anne of Kannapolis, NC, Tim Ballard & wife, Camille of Concord, NC, and Tamara Biggerstaff & husband, Randy of Green Bay, VA; her granddaughters, Jennifer Balentine & husband, William, Stephanie Plummer & husband, Dwayne, Courtney Keller & husband, Chad, all of Kannapolis, NC, and Garrett Ballard of Concord, NC; and four great-grandsons. Charitable contributions can be made in her memory to Charity Baptist Church, 2420 Brantley Road, Kannapolis, NC 28083.
