Obituary: Lizzie Angeline Fortner age 95 lately of Scottsboro, Alabama died August 29, 2010 at Cloverdale Care Center surrounded by loved ones singing "Face to Face with Christ, my Saviour" of causes due to old age Viewing Wed, Sept 1, at 10:00 Service at 11:00 Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel, followed by graveside service at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. Service conducted by Grandson-in-law, Rev. David Hixson. Graveside service by Grandsons-in-law Rev. David Lane and Rev. Nate Watkins. Born November 27, 1914 to W. E. and Ivory Jane (Yost) Fortner and raised in the Salisbury/Kannapolis area. "Only one life, 'twill soon be past. Only what's done for Christ will last!" This was Grandma Fortner's favorite poem and the way she lived her life. Grandma served the Lord as a devoted wife and mother and servant of the Lord in her church and daily living. She taught Sunday Schoolat Oxen Hill Baptist Church in Oxen Hill, Maryland. She and her husband, J.W. Fortner, were founding members of Allentown Baptist Church in Allentown, Maryland and Independent Baptist Church of Clinton, Maryland, both churches celebrating over 50 years of ministry in their communities. She served in the Visitation Ministries and Choir and was the Cafeteria Manager for the Clinton Christian School. Their home was always a welcoming place of hospitality for visiting missionaries and preachers. After J.W. passed on sheworked for Frontier Baptist Mission in Harlingen, Texas and Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, Tennessee. During her sojourn in Chattanooga, her home was a "home away from home" for many of the TTU students who loved her vegetable beef soup, homemade biscuitsand kraut dumplings.For many ofher senior years, she and her special friend, Leslie Segsworth, had a nursing home ministry through Highland Park Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They loved the older folks and went from room to room comforting the residents and telling them of Jesus' love, visiting a different nursing home each day. As a shut-in herself in later years, she hosted a Ladies Bible Study in her home and discipled women one on one. She was a faithful witness to all who visited her apartment and, lately, herroom at Cloverdale Care Center. Preceded in death by parents, husband, John Woodly Fortner (deceased in 1972), first born infant daughter, son, Jerry Mac Fortner, daughter-in-law, Virginia (Cain) Fortner, grandson, Daniel David Dean; great great-granddaughter, Kaitlin Marie Pennington, sister, Mary McBride, and brother Everett Leazer. Survived by daughter, Martha Jo (Kenneth) Dean of Tooele, UT; son, Edward Fortner of Scottsboro, AL; Grandchildren, Elizabeth Dean(Richard)Copeland, Lois Dean (David) Lane, Deborah Dean (Charles) Richards, Karol Dean (Nathan) Watkins, Kenneth Dean II, Jonathan Dean, Faith Fortner (David) Hixson, Joy Fortner (Stanley) Gibby, Robin Fortner (Nick) Morris, Regina Fortner (Robert) Mullins, and John Fortner. 32 Great Grandchildren 14 Great-Great Grandchildren and her siblings were John (Lucille) Leazer, Mary (Gilmer) McBride (deceased), Effie (Frank) Stiller, William (Blanche) Leazer, Everett (Frances) Leazer, (deceased); Marie (Raymond) Miller, Evelyn (Glen) Page, and Clinton "Jim" (Joanne) Leazer.
Visitation: 10-11:00 A.M. Wednesday September. 1, 2010 at Whitley's Funeral Home.

Service: 11 A.M. Wednesday Sep. 1, 2010 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment: Carolina Mem. Park
