Obituary: Kannapolis, NC Lloyd Preston Hurst, age 78, of Kannapolis died Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at CMC-NE, Concord after a period of declining health. His funeral service will be at 3:00 PM Sunday, October 3 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel with Dr. R.J. Hammonds officiating. The family will receive friends at Whitley's Funeral Home from 1:30 to 3:00 PM prior to the funeral, at other times they will be at the family home. Burial with military rites will take place at 12:00 PM Monday, October 4 at Salisbury National Cemetery. Lloyd was born August 22, 1932 in Chesterfield, SC to the late A. P. and Ada Dunn Hurst. He moved here with his family when he was young. Lloyd attended McIver Elementary School and Cannon High School. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving as a paratrooper during the Korean Conflict. He was a machinist for Linn-Corriher Mills in Landis, retiring in 1997 and also owned and operated Hurst Fencing Co. until retiring again in 2004. Lloyd was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church. Lloyd was a kind and gentle man who loved deeply. He was the greatest husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend anyone could ever ask for, and we were the lucky ones in life because he was given to us. He will forever be in our hearts and he made us who we are today. He taught us a love that is so rare and unconditional and we thank you Lloyd for everything you gave to us.You gave so unselfishly. Lloyd is survived by his wife of 35 years, Beverly Flynn Hurst of the home, his 5 daughters; Sharon Allen of Kannapolis, Kelly Finger (John) of Concord, Lisa Lam (Hugh) of Houston TX, Lori Hyler (Randell) of Charlotte and Jennie Van Dongen (Pierre) of Charlotte. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren; Andrew and Lindsey Allen, Alex and Jeremy Finger, Kayla and Kyler Griffin and Josey Hyler; sisters, Jean Richardson and Reba Hodge, both of Kannapolis and brother, Dewey Hurst of Cheraw, SC. In addition to his parents Lloyd was preceded in death by infant twin sons, Mark and Michael Hurst, his son-in-law, Mark Allen, brothers, Floyd Lee and M. T. Hurst and sisters, Edith Goodman and Mary Catherine Laney.
