Obituary: Kannapolis, NC- Lucille Peeler Walters, age 97, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2015, at Brian Center, Concord, NC. She was born September 14, 1918, in Rowan County, NC, the daughter of the late Robert Lee Peeler and Elsie Mae Safrit Peeler. Raised in Faith, NC, Lucille was a graduate of the former Granite Quarry High School. She was employed by the former Cannon Mills Company for forty-five years. After retirement, she worked for an additional ten years for the former Zayre's Department Store in Kannapolis. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Kannapolis, where she taught in the children's department for more than twenty years, participated in Bible study classes, and senior trips and activities. Lastly, she served for more than thirty years as a volunteer at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital which became CMC-NorthEast hospital. While there she received a presidential recognition as an outstanding volunteer. She was proudly known by her great-grandchildren as "Grandmother Great." In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, Everett Smith and second husband, Harrison Walters; two brothers, Harry Peeler and Roy Lee Peeler; and one sister, Bonnie Morrow. A private burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park. A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, October 15, 2015, at First Baptist Church, Kannapolis, officiated by Dr. Thomas E. Cabaniss. Following the memorial service, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall. Survivors include her son, Dr. Grover Smith and wife Cynthia; three grandchildren, Mac Smith and wife Genny and their children Lily and Mason; Sam Smith and wife Heather and their children Sammy and Cole; and Ben Smith and wife Jaime and their son Owen, all of Raleigh, NC; her sister Willie Lyerly of Wilmington, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, in honor of the Valet Parking Ministry, 101 N. Main Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
