Obituary: Mabel Bluefield Shoaf Koontz passed away on September 12, 2018 at Carolina Meadows Retirement Community in Chapel Hill, NC. Born March 12, 1923 in Lexington, NC, Mabel was a daughter of the late Bessie Golden Leonard and Fred Casey Shoaf and was one of thirteen children. She graduated from Tyro High School and was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Lexington. After her marriage to Robert D. Koontz, they moved to Washington DC where they worked for the U.S. Government Map Services. In 1940 they moved to Kannapolis where they both worked for Cannon Mills Co. until retirement in 1980. Mabel was a member of Center Grove Lutheran Church in Kannapolis, where she taught Sunday School, served on the Altar Guild and volunteered in many other capacities in the church. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. Mabel loved flowers and spent many hours working in her garden. She also enjoyed sewing and cooking. Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Koontz, her son, Jerry Paul Koontz of Pittsboro, granddaughter, Erin Koontz Farrior, two sisters, Louise Shoaf Simmerson, Kathleen Shoaf Grubb, and 2 brothers, Telo and Bud Shoaf. She is survived by her granddaughter, Laura Koontz Eversole and great-granddaughter, Ruth Eversole, both of Idyllwild, CA, two sisters, Tina May and Maxine Richardson, and six brothers, Tom, Casey, Charles Henry, James, Bill and Donald Shoaf, all of Lexington. A celebration of Mabel's life will be held with a graveside service at Carolina Memorial Park at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 18 with Rev. John Futterer officiating. Her family will receive friends at Whitley's Funeral Home Annex Chapel from 12:00 to 1:30 PM Tuesday, prior to the graveside service. The family would like to thank the medical staff and caregivers, at the health center at Carolina meadows, for the love and support they gave Mabel and her family over the years. Memorial Contributions can be made in her name to the Renew 300 Fund at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 900 E. Rosemary St. Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
