Obituary: Magalea Pope Caldwell, 93, Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Kannapolis, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday night August 31, 2014 at Gulf Healthcare Center in Galveston, TX, following a period of declining health. Born September 11, 1920, she was a native of western Ashe County and was the daughter of the late Maude Allen Pope and Avery Pope. She moved to Kannapolis in 1939 where she met the love of her life, the late Marion Caldwell. They were married in 1946 and shortly thereafter made their residence in Kannapolis. During her 57 years of marriage, she was a loving, dedicated wife and mother. An active member of Second Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis for over 50 years, she served her church in numerous capacities and was active as long as her health allowed. She was employed at Draymore Mfg. in Mooresville during the mid-60's and then Cannon Mills until her retirement in 1982. After Marion's death, she stayed with her daughter, Pat, in Galveston, TX making regular trips back to North Carolina. Funeral services for Mrs. Caldwell will be held at 12:00 PM Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Second Presbyterian Church with Rev. Howard Tyas officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. In addition to her husband, Magalea was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Ann Caldwell, three sisters; Clara, Romey and Bessie, four brothers; Henry, Burl, Norman, and Jack Edward. She is survived by a daughter; Pat Schmidt (Joe Henry) of Galveston, TX, a son; James Caldwell (Rene`) of Mt. Pleasant, granddaughter; Taylor Cline (Ben), and great-granddaughter, Shylah Cline of Wallburg, NC, granddaughter; Marilea Schmidt of Galveston, TX, grandson; Grant Caldwell (Tonya) and great-grandson Elijah Caldwell of Aiken, SC, grandsons; Daniel Caldwell of Mt. Pleasant, Joe Schmidt III (Lisa) of Los Alamos, NM, and John Schmidt (Melissa) of Galveston, TX, sisters; Margaret, Doris, Jackie, and Nora and brothers; Charles, Joe and Bryce.
