Marcus Hugh Lingle, at 103 years, was called home to be with his heavenly father on Tuesday morning, February 13, 2024. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Sherrill Lingle, whom he married on March 28, 1944, his parents Ervin and Mamie Lingle, sister Edna (Elijah) Grissom, and brothers Wilburn (Annette) Lingle, Elvis (Ruby) Lingle, James (Izetta) Lingle and Ervin (Betty) Lingle, Jr. Left to cherish his memory are his brother Vernon Lingle, sisters Virginia Kluttz and Gilla Wingo and numerous nephews and nieces.
As members of the ‘greatest generation’, Marcus and four of his five brothers served their country during World War II. He served in the Navy, 1944-46 aboard a mine sweeping ship. His career path included working at Canon Mills and later as an auto mechanic. He was also adept at carpentry and house painting. As a long time member of Center Grove Lutheran Church, he was always available to help out with their projects.
Loved by all who knew him, Marcus was a jovial sort, always ready to share a litany of jokes, and maintained the Lingle tradition of never meeting a candy bowl he didn’t like. Marcus loved his large vegetable garden and enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed rabbit hunting, but his favorite pastime was surf fishing with his family, primarily at Topsail Island, especially when whiting and drum were running.
The service will be held at Center Grove Lutheran Church, 1601 S Cannon Blvd., Kannapolis, 28083 on Tuesday,
February 20, 2024. Visitation will be at 1:30 pm followed by the service at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Center Grove Cemetery fund. Online condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com
Happy Memories
I'd like the memory of me
to be a happy one.
I'd like to leave an afterglow
of smiles when life is done.
I'd like to leave an echo
whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times
and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve
to dry before the sun
Of happy memories that I leave
when life is done.
