Margaret Starnes Brown

November 27, 1926 — July 26, 2012

Obituary: Margaret Starnes Brown, 85, passed away on July 26, 2012, at her home from complications resulting from stroke. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, James Walter Brown. Born November 27, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Jesse H. Starnes, Sr. and Juanita Starnes Beaver. She attended Odell School and worked for many years at Cannon Mills and at T&N Manufacturing. She was a longtime and faithful member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and attended regularly until her health prevented it. Soft spoken, gentle and always with a smile, Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be missed by her loving family and all who knew her. She loved to crochet and was known as a wonderful cook, welcoming any and all to her table. Daughters Nancy Whipple of Davidson, NC; Phyllis Milem of Kannapolis, NC; and Jan Sides of Davidson, NC, survive Margaret. She is also survived by grandchildren Tommy Whipple, Jr., David Whipple, Dana Whipple and Timothy Whipple of Davidson, NC; Scott Milem and wife Lisa of Mooresville, NC; Mike Milem and wife Kim of Rockwell, NC; Jen Pierce and husband Jamie of Kannapolis, NC; and Ashleigh Robertson and husband Scott of Concord, NC. Surviving great grandchildren are Nicholas Milem, Matthew Milem and Mark Milem of Mooresville, NC; Britney Perryman of Rockwell, NC; and Lorelei James Robertson of Concord, NC. She is also survived by an extended family to whom she was very close: Beverly Starnes; Peggy Smith and husband Bill; Mable Morgan and husband Bus; Gene Brown and wife Phyllis; Nell Seaford; Lib Johnston and Rachel Ritchie. Brothers Charles Starnes, Jesse Starnes and Don Starnes, sisters Mildred Elwood and Jackie Bruce and her stepfather Bernard C. Beaver also preceded her in death. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Brown will be held on Monday, July 30, 2012 at 11:00 am at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. Gary Steedley. The family will greet family and friends 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery in Concord, NC. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made in Margaret's name to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or to the mortgage fund at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 4149 Odell School Road, Concord, NC 28027.
