Marjorie Smith Plummer

February 4, 1921 — December 6, 2012

Obituary: Ollie Marjorie Smith Plummer, age 91, passed peacefully away on Thursday, December 6, 2012 in Monticello, Georgia. Born February 4, 1921 in Bailey, North Carolina, to Robert Lee and Grace Goodnight Smith, she was a 1938 graduate of Bailey High School. She and Floyd Elmore Plummer were married on September 5, 1948 and resided in Kannapolis, where she was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Upon retirement in 1985, they moved to Carolina Beach, where they enjoyed life at the beach until Floyd's death in 1989. During the next five years she divided time at the beach with months assisting her sister, Lillie Mae Smith, with the care of their mother, Grace, in Salisbury, who lived until 1995 attaining the age of 100. In 1994, Marjorie moved to Raleigh to be closer to her children. From her home at Bishops Park, she attended Hayes Barton Methodist Church, plays, concerts, and NCSU basketball games. In 2001, Marjorie moved to Trinity Oaks Senior Community in Salisbury. She resided there until 2004 when she returned to Raleigh to live with her daughter, Janet. In declining health, she moved to The Retreat in Monticello, Georgia in 2006, then residence of her son, Gordon. The family wishes to thank the staff and administration of The Retreat for the care and kindness they provided her. We will be forever indebted to Hattie Driskell, her personal caregiver for the past six years, for the care that she lovingly provided. We also thank Brenda Chalk and Denise Boyd of Salisbury for their care of our mother from 2002-2004. She is survived by her son, D. Gordon Plummer and his partner, Rod Perry; her daughter, Janet Grace Plummer and her partner, Brenon Day; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Withers Smith; many nieces and nephews, one grand dog, Bonnie, and two grandcats, Marti and Manny. She was predeceased by her brothers, Richard Lee Smith and Addison Neal Smith, and her beloved sister, Lillie Mae Smith. A funeral service will be held 1:00 P.M. Friday December 14, 2012 at the Whitley's Funeral Home Annex Chapel with the Rev. Judy White officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00 P.M. - 1:00 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Independent Animal Rescue, P.O.
