Obituary: Marler Slate Tuttle, Jr., 63, of Kannapolis, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Big Elm Nursing Center. He experienced progressively declining health over the past 10 years due to early onset Alzheimer's disease. Known to all as Slate, he was born on May 13, 1950 in Cabarrus County, N.C. to the late Dr. Marler Slate Tuttle, Sr. and Miriam Goodrum Tuttle. He earned his undergraduate ('72) and law degree from Wake Forest University ('75). Slate was a standout athlete at A.L. Brown High School and a member of the conference champion Demon Deacon golf team at Wake Forest University. He was known in his community for his acts of kindness, whether it was buying clothes for friends who faced a tragedy or cooking a meal for new neighbors. In addition to his parents, his sister, Patricia Alice Tuttle, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jolynn Tuttle, of Kannapolis; his daughter, Tricia Tuttle, of London, and sons Tripp Tuttle and Chad Tuttle, of Durham; two grandchildren, Chet Hanson-Tuttle and Lois Hanson-Tuttle, of London; two sisters, Susu Aldridge of Greenville and Margaret Burlew of Tarboro; and a brother, Dr. John C. Tuttle of Kannapolis. Slate was part of a loving extended family, including his nine nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to either the Kannapolis Education Foundation (http://www.kefgives.org/) or the Kannapolis Booster Club.
