Martha Helms Childress

Obituary: Martha Helms Childress, 88 from Salisbury, NC passed Monday, November 18, 2013 with a brain tumor; at the home of Bennie and Eva Kerley (her daughter) while in the care of Hospice of Cabarrus County. Born on March 30, 1925 in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Stafford Helms and the late Margaret Miller Fincher Helms. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, William M. Childress, a daughter, Carol Childress Goodwin, grandchildren; Dwayne St John and Christopher Goodwin. Martha was a long time member of Rockwell Church of God in Rockwell, NC. She had been employed by both Chorriher Mills and Fieldcrest Cannon retiring in 1987. Survivors include her daughter, Eva Childress Kerley (Bennie) of China Grove, NC, a son-in-law, Lawrence Goodwin of Rockwell, NC., grandchildren; John Goodwin (Jeannie) of Carterville, GA, and Tamara Goodwin Chambers (Steven) of Albemarle; five great-grandchildren, Rachel Chambers, Miller Chambers Elizabeth Chambers, John Lawrence Goodwin and Sarah Goodwin Jones; one great-great grandchild, Reuben. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Aaron Phillips. Burial will take place at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove, NC. The family will receive friend at the funeral home from 12:00 to 1:00 pm before the funeral service.
