Obituary: Marty L. Goodale, age 61, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2016 at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner V.A. Medical Center, Salisbury, NC after a short illness of battling cancer. He was born September 29, 1954 in Chesterfield County, SC, the son of and Sarah Jane Goodale Grooms of Kannapolis, NC and the late John Henry Deese. In his earlier years Marty was employed as a truck driver with Terminal Trucking for many years. He loved playing golf, watching NASCAR, and in earlier years played semi-pro football with the former Cabarrus Cardinals after getting out of the Marine Corps. Marty served in the US Marine Corps from 1973 to 1977 spending much of his time in Morocco. In addition to his father he is preceded in death by two sisters, Wanda Safrit and Gloria Jackson; and a brother-in-law, Ronnie Jackson (Gloria's husband). The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC. Burial will follow at the National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC at 1:00 PM with military rites conducted by the US Marine Corps and the Rowan County veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Tuesday at the funeral home prior to the service. Survivors in addition to his mother include a sister, Sherry Furr (Randy) of Rockwell, NC; a brother, David Grooms of Kannapolis, NC; six nephews, Jerry Barnhardt of Kannapolis, NC; Johnny Mitchell Jackson of Landis, NC; Chris Bivens of Monroe, NC; Tim Jackson of Concord, NC; Jason Sawyer of China Grove, NC and Shannon Sawyer of Kannapolis, NC; and three nieces, Brittany Alverson and Casey Scarborough, both of Salisbury, NC; and Chloe Sawyer of Mooresville, NC.
