Mary Kerr Barnes

Obituary: Mary Nell Kerr Barnes, 95, formally of China Grove, N.C. passed away Friday, January 18, 2013. She was born on August 5, 1917, in Iredell County, the daughter of the late Lender Deaton Kerr and Martha Jane "Mattie" Belk Kerr of Mt. Ulla. Ms. Barnes was the oldest daughter of 14 children. She was employed for many years in the Sewing Room of Cannon Mills, Becky's Fabrics and The Fabric Shop, all of Kannapolis and retired from Hersch Celense. She was a member for many years of Blackwelder Park Baptist Church in Kannapolis. Ms. Barnes was preceded in death by husbands Homer K. Riley and John C. Barnes and daughter Janelle Foster, all of Kannapolis. Also, by seven (7) brothers: Flake, Grey, Grady, Marvin, Bill, Steve and Paul Kerr. Left to cherish her memories is daughter and son-in-law, Judy R. and Jake Speck of China Grove, granddaughter and husband, Aprille and Eric Henrickson, great grandchildren, Hunter Cole and McKenna Grace Henrickson, all of Concord. Sisters, Ruth Horne, of Mooresville, Mildred Helms and Ruby Goodman of Salisbury, Martha Brinson of Columbus, NC, Elsie Robinson of Charlotte and brother L.D. Kerr of Mooresville. Sister-in-laws, Evelyn Kerr and Nancy Kerr both of Mt. Ulla, along with 39 nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5 pm to 7 pm at Whitley's Funeral Home, Kannapolis on Sunday, Jan 20. Funeral service will be Monday, Jan 21 at 2:00 pm at Blackwelder Park Baptist Church, Kannapolis conducted by Rev. Stan Welch, her pastor of many years. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family wishes to thank the staff of Horizon Bay Assisted Living, Hall 200, for the special love and care they gave Nell during her time there. A special thank you to the wonderful staff of Hospice and the Tucker Hospice House, Dr. Keiling and his staff, and the visitation team from Blackwelder Park Baptist Church.
