Mary Anna Boger

July 8, 1924 — August 7, 2015

Obituary: Mrs. Boger, 91, died August 7th, 2015 after several months of declining health. Mary Anna was born July 8, 1924, on her parents' farm in the township of White Store in Anson County, NC. She was the youngest of five children born to the late L Huntley, Sr. and the late Margaret Eulalia Faulkner Huntley. Mary Anna attended school in Peachland, NC, graduating from Peachland High School in 1941, as class valedictorian. After high school she enrolled at Flora Macdonald College in Red Springs, NC, graduating in 1945, with a degree in English and History. Her first year after college, Mary Anna taught at Stanley High School in Stanley, NC. In 1946, she moved to Kannapolis, NC, where she taught at J.W. Cannon High School for six years. She also met her first husband, Joseph Thomas Vinson, in Kannapolis. Mary Anna and Joe were married from 1947 - 1974. At the close of the 1951/1952 school year Mary Anna moved to Amarillo, TX, where Joe was stationed on the Amarillo Air Force Base. While living in Amarillo, their daughter Dottie was born in November of 1953. Joe's stint in the Air Force ended in October of 1955, and they returned to Kannapolis. In March of 1956, they welcomed their second daughter, Debbie, to the family. In 1978, Mary Anna reconnected with Kannapolis native, Samuel Reeves Boger, who she had dated for a short time after moving to Kannapolis. Mary Anna and Sam wed in February of 1979. They were married until Sam's death in October of 2013. Growing up on the family farm fostered Mary Anna's love of nature and of the outdoors. She always preferred yard work to housework, yet she was an accomplished seamstress. Curtains, clothes, dance costumes and Christmas stockings for entire school classes, she could do it all. Mary Anna loved growing plants, especially Lenten roses, and was quick to share them with others. Even in her final days, she enjoyed watching her backyard birds, bunnies and chipmunks. Always the teacher, she was educating her caregivers on the identities of the birds at the feeders outside her bedroom window. In addition to her parents, L and Eula, and husband Sam, Mary Anna was preceded in death by her brothers L Huntley, Jr., and John William "Bub" Huntley. Mary Anna is survived by her daughters Dorothy Vinson Ross and husband Owen B. Ross of Charlotte, NC and Debora Vinson Winchester and husband Michael L. "Wink" Winchester of Monroe, NC; her sisters Mattie Lou Huntley Horne of Peachland, NC and Dorothy M. Huntley of Monroe, NC; her stepdaughters Jennifer Boger West and husband Bill West of Everett, WA and Dee Boger Schultz and husband Larry Schultz of South Daytona, FL. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 12th, 2015, from 5-7pm at Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis, NC. In accordance with Mary Anna's wishes, no memorial service will be held.
