Obituary: Mary Helms Hess, 88, of Kannapolis passed away peacefully, Sunday, November 28, 2010 at Big Elm Nursing Center. She was born December 12, 1921 in Union County, the daughter of the late Albert Lester Helms and Sarah Frances Austin Helms. Her husband George Odell Hess, preceded her in death. She was a member at Running Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Mrs. Hess was employed for over 40 years at Cannon Mills and retired from the Set Dept. She participated in many craft activities at the Kannapolis YMCA and enjoyed traveling and crochet. Funeral services will be 2:30 PM Friday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Elder Richard Almond. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 prior to the service. She is survived by four sisters: Pauline Bowers of Mooresville, Evelyn Mincey, Johnnie Frye and Jackie Helms all of Kannapolis. She was very well thought of by her nieces and nephews Glen Bowers of El Paso, TX, Jean Chislaghi of Mooresville, Bill Mincey, Jr. (deceased), Martha Mincey of Kannapolis, Steven Frye of Cherryville, and Patricia Frye Huffman of Mooresville..
