Mary Lee Hastings Lawing

Obituary: Mary Lee Hastings Karriker Lawing, age 92, peacefully went to be with her Heavenly Father surrounded by her loved ones on Sunday, May 10, 2015 at Universal Healthcare, Concord, NC after a prolonged battle with dementia. She was born June 19, 1922 in Mecklenburg County, NC, the daughter of the late Joseph Grady Hastings and Allie Starnes Hastings. Mary was employed with the former Cannon Mills Company, Plant One, # 1 Spinning Room where she was time keeper. She worked forty-five years for the company until her retirement. She was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Concord, NC where she had been active in various church activities throughout the years. After her retirement she enjoyed working in her garden, baking, and spending quality time with her granddaughter, Lauren. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by 1st husband, Ralph Junious Karriker; 2nd husband, Garland Ezell Lawing; three brothers, Carl, Wilbur, and Ralph Hastings; one sister, Madie H. Raburn; and her step-mother, Ella Hastings. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Concord, NC officiated by Rev. Peter Feige. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Wednesday at the church prior to the service. Survivors include her daughter, Sylvia Karriker Hill & husband, Randall Hill of Kannapolis, NC; her granddaughter, Lauren Hill of Kannapolis, NC; a sister-in-law, Pearl K. Brannon of Concord, NC; many nieces and nephews including Gloria Smith of Concord, NC and Kaye Bowers of Kannapolis, NC; and a very special friend, Dorothy Hill of Kannapolis, NC. The family would like to say a very special thank-you to the staff of Universal Healthcare of Concord for their love and compassion shown to Mary during her time spent there.
