Obituary: Mary Elizabeth Vannoy Scott "Granny" died peacefully on November 13, 2011 after spending a weekend surrounded by her family, friends, and extended family at the Cottage House at Caremoor. Mary was born on July 19, 1924 in Wilkes County, NC to John Monroe and Oleva Vannoy. She was preceded in death by ten brothers and sisters: Lewis, John, Doc, Will, Ruth, Dolly, Sally, Rosie, Mattie, and her twin sister, Martha. Mary was married for 49 years to Norman Wilson Scott, who preceded her in death in 1994. She was also preceded in death by son-in-law, Robert Jack and her faithful canine companion of 15 years, Maggie Church.She is the mother of 3 daughters: Jackie Scott Jack, of Key Largo, Florida; Dianne Scott Moon, and her husband, Joe of China Grove, N.C., and Lynne Scott Safrit and her husband Wally, of Kannapolis. She had 10 grandchildren: Kara Waite, Robin Sarner, Jennifer Vonhagen, Amanda Fulmer, Chris Moon, Jason Moon, Jenni Moon Alfaro, Miller Safrit, Elizabeth Safrit, and Wil Safrit, and 12 great-grandchildren. Mary worked in the #7 Spinning Room of Cannon Mills Company for 43 years, alongside her husband, Norman where she retired in 1986. She was an active member of West Point Baptist Church, where in past years she sang in the choir, was a member of the WMU, and taught Acteens and Sunday School in the preschool department. Mary is also survived by her dog and constant companion, Scottie, who brought great joy to her life.Mary's family would like to say thank you to Charlie Campbell, who cared for Scottie during the last twelve months of her declining health, and to Tom and Teresa Kincaid and the loving staff of Caremoor who took such excellent care of her during this last year. They would also like to thank the staff of Wendy's on Cannon Blvd. in Kannapolis and Mary's lunch friends at Wendy's who were her second family.A celebration of Mary's life will take place at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel at 3:30 on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 with Rev. Blair Bridle and Rev. Charlie Littlejohn officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service from 1:30 pm until 3:30 pm. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in Concord.Memorial gifts may be sent to the Cabarrus Pet Society, P.O Box 5042, Concord, NC 28027 and the Worship and Arts Ministry at Crossroads Methodist Church, 220 George W.
