Max Conrad Sloop, age 85, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. He was born November 2, 1938, in Rowan County, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Grover Nehemiah Sloop and Ollie Belle Patterson Sloop.
Conrad was a multi-sport lettered athlete standout at A.L. Brown High School, graduating in 1957. He went on to graduate from UNC Chapel Hill in 1962 where he played football as a defensive end and running back on scholarship.
After graduating from college, he joined Cannon Mills, where he worked for 41 years until his retirement, in 2003. He also served on the Kannapolis Planning Board for 24 years, during the expansion of Kannapolis, as a Rowan County Representative. He was a devoted member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church since 1980.
His most important job was being a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His family fondly remembers his love of farming, boating, spending time in Oak Island, and pulling for his beloved UNC Tarheels.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Gail Smith Sloop, a brother, Harold Sloop, two sisters, Margaret Sloop, Joan Sloop Walter, and a daughter, Beth Wood Karriker.
Family members left with cherished memories include his son, Joe Sloop (Lisa), daughters, LeAnn Sloop Logan (Jason), Gigi Sloop Berg (Todd), grandchildren, Joseph Daniel Sloop, Anna Pinto (Frank), Emily Cordero (Kenny), Mary Beth Wood Hernandez (Uli), four great grandchildren, and his dear friend, Jane Anderson of Kannapolis, NC.
The family will receive friends at Kimball Lutheran Church from 10:00 to 11:45am on Saturday October 26, 2024. The funeral service to celebrate his life will be held in the sanctuary at Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, officiated by Reverend John Futterer. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
