Obituary: Melvin Carl Helms, 73, of Kannapolis died Friday, June 27, 2014 after a period of declining health. His funeral service will be held at 2:30 PM Monday, June 30 at Bethpage Presbyterian Church-Kannapolis with Rev. Ellen Campbell Gardner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. His family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Monday prior to the funeral. Melvin was born July 9, 1940 in Union Co. NC, a son of the late Carl and Nell Griffin Helms. He was a longtime area resident and member of Bethpage Presbyterian Church-Kannapolis. Melvin worked for Cannon Mills in the Cotton Dept. for many years until he retired. He worked part time as a farrier in North and South Carolina and enjoyed hunting. Melvin was an excellent husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Eudy Helms of the home, his daughter, Terrie H. Miller (Arnold) of Irmo, SC, his grandchildren, Adam and Catherine Miller, his brother, Billy Don Helms (Elaine) of Kannapolis and several nieces and nephews.
