Obituary: Melvin Jesse Perkins, 59, of China Grove died Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at CMC NorthEast, Concord. He had been in declining health but death was unexpected. He was born May 31, 1950 in Baltimore County, Maryland son of Hedy Mae Miller Perkins of New Brighton, Penn. and the late James William Perkins. Prior to becoming disabled he was a regional truck driver for Mayflower and Atlas Van Lines. He was of the Baptist Faith. He was a Veteran of the US Army 101st Airborne Division having served two tours of duty in Vietnam where he was awarded a purple heart and two bronze stars. Services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, October 12, 2009 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Mike Hubbard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 6:00-9:00 P.M. Interment will follow in Salisbury National Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the NC Army Guard and the Rowan County Veteran's Honor Guard. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife: Cindy Maydwell Perkins of the Home, a Son: Jesse Perkins of Baltimore, Md. a Daughter: Marcia Hershey of Clover, S.C., a Step- Daughter: Shannon Baldwin of Durham, two Brothers: Harold Perkins of New Brighton, Md., Ron Perkins of Kannapolis, a Sister: Carol Kitzmiller of Harrisburg, Va. Five Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of North Carolina, 5950 Fairview Road, Suite 550, Charlotte, NC 28210-2102.
