Obituary: Michael Eugene "Gene" Barnhardt, age 72, of China Grove went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 19, 2017 from NC State Veterans Home in Salisbury after a period of declining health with his family by his side. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Sunday, May 21 at Central Baptist Church in Kannapolis with Rev. Curtis Parker officiating. His family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday at the church. Entombment services will follow at 2:00 PM Monday, May 22 at West Lawn Chapel Mausoleum. Gene was born July 7, 1944 in Rowan County, the son of the late Frank and Vae Wilson Barnhardt. He was a life-long area resident and long-time member of Central Baptist Church. Gene loved the Lord and he loved his family. He referred to his grandson was "his heart-beat". Gene worked for 45 years in construction and was a grading supervisor for many projects, both local and statewide in North and South Carolina. He loved fishing, mowing grass and Western Square dancing. Gene was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed. Gene is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ann Goodnight Barnhardt of China Grove, his daughter, Angela B. Price (Michael) of Winston Salem his grandson, CPL Tanner Michael Everhart USMC of Beaufort, SC, his 2 sisters, Wanda Melchor of Charlotte and Becki Barnhardt of Memphis TN and several nieces and nephews.
