Michael Jay Smith

Michael Jay Smith of Kannapolis, NC formally of Watertown, NY died December 17, 2024 peacefully under the care of the Tucker Hospice House, with his family surrounding him after a brief and courageous fight of lung cancer.  

Born on December 19, 1964, he was the first son born to Michael and Janet (Prior) Smith. Mike lovingly got the nickname "Tyke" that lasted him his entire life.

 Mike grew up in Hounsfield and attended South Jefferson and Thousand Island Schools. After graduation, he enlisted into the United States Army. After discharge, he worked various jobs including Pepsi Bottling Company as well as offering various handyman services. 

 He met the love of his life Robin Denicola in 1989. They were wed in the summer of 1995. They always laughed as they recalled that the justice of the peace was covered in motor oil because he forgot they were coming. They had their only child Ashleigh in July of 1990.

 Michael relocated to North Carolina after the death of his wife Robin and continued doing various jobs and handyman work. You would always see his trusting and loving dog Willow by his side. Tyke always had a huge heart for animals. He also had a passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working with his hands.

 Michael is predeceased by his parents Michael and Janet Smith; as well as his wife Robin in 2009.

 Michael is survived by his daughter Ashleigh Smith (Matthew Gamage) and his grandchildren Everleigh, Mattix, and Rory Gamage, Watertown; his sister Shawn (Martin)Cougler, Statesville, NC; his brother Mark (Darcy) Smith, Fair Haven, NY; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

 The family would like to extend their appreciation for the excellent and compassionate care of the Tucker Hospice House.

 Time to rest now Tyke, the fight is over.

 Spring arrangements in New York will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks a donation to be made to the Tucker Hospice House 5003 Hospice Lane Kannapolis, NC 28081 in Michael's name.
