Obituary: Michael Thomas Owens, 69, of Salisbury passed away Monday, June 4, 2018 at CHS NorthEast after a very long battle with metastatic prostate cancer. Mike was born November 27, 1948 in Cabarrus County, to the late James Louie Owens and Margaret Thomas Owens. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lesa Bishop-Furr and a brother, William Owens. Mike was a retired Sergeant with the US Army serving in the Vietnam War where he was wounded in action in February 1971. His bravery earned him several medals including the Bronze Star Medal for Valor and the Purple Heart. He grew up in the small town of Landis, NC and was a 1967 graduate of South Rowan High School, where he played Football. After his service in Vietnam, he earned his B.A. in Psychology from Pfeiffer University. He was a generous, loving, compassionate man with a great sense of humor. He loved children and throughout his life he sponsored countless children through Child Fund International. Mike loved nature, whether it was taking a walk in the woods, going to the mountains, observing weather, or just driving down country roads. He also enjoyed reading, music, golf, football. But most of all Mike loved his family and spending time with them. Mike is survived by his wife, Patricia Holloway Owens, children, Brittany Owens (Israel Everhart), Angel Owens, Richard Talbert III, Tommy Owens (Teresa); 6 grandchildren: Abreyel, Azayah, Adriel, Jonathan, Zac and Savannah; sister, Melissa Sutton (Richie) and brother, Jimmy Owens; as well many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and "honorary daughters." Funeral services will be held at 4pm this Saturday (June 9th, 2018) at Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis with Pastor Billy Sechrist officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-4pm prior to the service. The interment will be at the National Cemetery with military honors at a later date.
