Obituary: Mildred Gordon Pennington, age 89, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at CMC-NorthEast, Concord, NC. She was born April 8, 1924 in Madison County, Georgia, the daughter of the late Samuel Washington Gordon and Minnie Bell Tiller Gordon. In earlier years Mildred was employed with the former Terry Products, Inc. in Kannapolis. Later, she and her husband moved to Shallotte, NC where they lived for almost twenty years and operated Dun-Rite Upholstery. Mildred returned to the Kannapolis area in 1989 where she had lived until the present. Mildred was a member of Roberta Baptist Church, Concord, NC. She is fondly remembered for playing cards games like Rummy, gardening, fishing, and planting flowers. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, George Pennington; a daughter, Carol Renae Gatton; a son, George Larry Pennington; one great-grandson, Jameson Guy Pennington; two brothers; and four sisters. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Landis Lancaster and her son, Rev. Steve Pennington. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service. Survivors include her daughters, Sandy Garver & husband, John of China Grove, NC; Sherry Donaldson of Rockwell, NC; her sons, Rev. Steve Pennington and wife, Cathy of Rockwell, NC; Donald Lynn Pennington & wife, Phyllis of Shallotte, NC; and Ronald Glenn Pennington of Charlotte, NC; and Jeffrey Guy Pennington & wife, Vicki of Kannapolis, NC; a sister, Peggy Harper of Atlanta, GA; eighteen grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
