Obituary: Morris Glenn Herbert, Sr., 81, of Kannapolis, went to be with His Lord on Monday, October 17, 2011, at his home following years of declining health. Morris was born February 2, 1930 in Toccoa, Georgia to the late Robert Sloan and Ada Shirley Herbert.He lived in Kannapolis for over 70 years and retired from Cannon Mills #1 weave room after 43 years of service.He was an accomplished musician, singer and songwriter. He began playing the banjo at the age of 16 and became one of the best in the area. His accomplishments included over 20 albums and several single recordings. He was part of several bands including The Drifting Troubadours, The Black Pit Boys, The Twin County Boys, Sunnyside and featured with the legendary J.E. Mainer and the Mountaineers.In addition to his love of music, he enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his family.Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 61 years, Betty Lewis Herbert of the family home; daughters Gwendolyn Rowell, Anita Benish and husband John, Marian Cook and husband Rusty and son Morris Herbert Jr., all of Kannapolis. He was blessed with seven grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; Delaina Currie, Sandy Petersen, Brad Herbert, Brett Cook, Cody Prater, Jasmine Herbert, Paxton Herbert, Macy Currie and Coltan Currie. He is also survived by a brother Hoyt Aaron Herbert and wife Fern of Toccoa, Georgia. He will be missed by many extended family and friends.In addition to his parents he is preceded in death brothers William Guy Herbert, Olin Oneal Herbert , Wildon "Bill" Herbert, Odell Herbert and sisters Ruby Irene Farmer, Eva Sue Isenhour and Mary Edna Deaton. The family will receive family and friends at Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis on Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m. At other times the family will be at the home.Rev. Ronnie Cooper will officiate the service, which will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the chapel.
