O. D. Benson, Jr.

Obituary: O. D. Benson, Jr., age 91, died Saturday, February 20, 2010 at CMC-NorthEast, Concord, NC after several years of declining health. He was born June 20, 1918 in Cabarrus County, NC, the son O.D. Benson, Sr. and Dema McCall Benson. For many years he was employed as a maintenance supervisor with General Tire and Douglas Aircraft. He had also taught at Horry-Georgetown Technical College and Fairlane Litchfield of Pawleys Island, SC. He was a lifelong member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, Concord, NC. Being very active in masonry throughout the years, he was a member of Cannon Memorial Lodge #626, past master of Zion Masonic Lodge #81, a 32 degree mason with the Scottish Rite Bodies of Charlotte, & a shriner with Oasis Temple. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two brothers, Richard (Dick) Benson, Mason Merle (Bill) Benson, & a sister, Evalee Myers. The funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 22, 2010 at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Concord, NC officiated by Rev. Bruce Handy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with masonic rites conducted by Cannon Mem. Lodge #626. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Monday at the church prior to the service. Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Evelyn McCall Benson; two daughters, Beverly Pennigar of Matthews, NC and Cathy MacQueen of Mooresville, NC; three step-children, Mike Powell & wife, Robbie of Kannapolis, NC, Jimmy Powell of Landis, NC, and Lynne Jones & husband, Dwight of Mooresville, NC; seven grandchildren, Chad MacQueen, Heath MacQueen & wife, Christina, Ryan Pennigar, Jill Coffey & husband, Clay, Amy Jones, Julie Morgan & husband, Adam, and Allison Powell; ten great-grandchildren, Wesley, Julia, Logan, Christian, Miranda, McKenzie, Parker, Jaycee, Jacob, and Talon; one brother, John Benson of Concord, NC and one sister, Hazel Bacon of Salisbury, NC.
