Olin Miles

Obituary: Kannapolis, NC Olin W. Miles, 80, of Kannapolis went home to be with the Lord on November 23, 2016. How beautiful Heaven must be. Born July 15, 1936 in Chesterfield County, SC, he was the son of the late Dewey L. Miles and Angie Tucker Miles. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lee Jordan. The Miles family moved to Kannapolis when Olin was four years old. He attended the Kannapolis City Schools and also Central Piedmont Community College where he received Associate Degrees in Arts, Applied Science and General Education. Olin was a disabled veteran having served with the US Army Vll Corps in Germany and the Concord National Guard. Olin served on the Kannapolis City Board of Adjustment and the Rowan County Housing Authority. He really enjoyed working in the Kannapolis City School System where he was PTA president in elementary, middle and high school. He also was president of the A.L. Brown High Band Club which he volunteered for 25 years. Olin also served on the High School Scholarship Committee and as a layman on the Study on Conduct for the city schools. Olin worked in Cannon Mills Packing Dept., then the US Postal Service where he began as a letter carrier. He then worked in the capacity of Supervisor of Mails and Delivery, Superintendent of Postal Operations and later, Postmaster. Olin was recognized as Top Ten Postmaster of Greensboro Division in 1991-92. He retired in 1992 from the Postal Service. Olin was a N.C. Real Estate Broker and managed Miles Rentals and Investment for many years. Olin was a member of the Kannapolis Church of God where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Church Clerk, Church Council and Elder. He also served on the building of both Big Elm Retirement and Nursing Home, the present church on West A Street including the Harvest House. Olin was recognized as Superintendent of the Year in Sunday School and Layman of the Year in all the Church of Gods in the state. Funeral services will be held at 6:00 PM Sunday, November 27, 2016 at Kannapolis Church of God officiated by Dr. Greg Sloop. The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6:00 PM at the church. Burial will be 10:00 AM Monday at Carolina Memorial Park with military honors. He is survived by cherished family members, his wife, Shelby Plyler Miles, whom he met in 1954 and married in 1956, two daughters, Oshellin Freeze Deal (Mike), Angie-Marie Miles McClure (Jim), three grandsons, Tyler, Tanner and Trey Freeze, step grandchildren, Ashley, Alex and Zachary Deal, Blake McClure, Krista Kirby and Cameron Thomas and sisters, Margaret McCarn and Thelma Cline. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of the ACCU Unit Third Floor at CMC-NorthEast for the love and care shown to Olin and his family.
