Peggy Ann Burton

Peggy Ann Pouncey Burton joined the Church Triumphant on October 17 at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville. Born on November 2, 1936 in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late W.T. “Pete” and Addie Ruth Pouncey. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James Robert Burton; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Max and Ruth Cruse; and a son-in-law, Robbie Adams. She is survived by her three daughters, Dr. Hughlene A. Burton, Anita B. Huffman (Linc) and Rev. Amy W. Burton; her pride and joy, her grandchildren, Pete M. Huffman and Kate L. Huffman; best friend, Patti Gray and many cousins and friends.

Peggy and Robert raised their family in Hickory, NC, where Peggy remained following Robert’s death in 1983. She raised her family teaching them how to stand strong and build their lives with faith in God as their foundation. She was proud that she was able to support all three of her daughters as they attended Wake Forest University. She was active in her church, Highland United Methodist Church, in Hickory, serving in many leadership positions until moving back to Kannapolis in 1996 where she joined Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, also serving in leadership.

Peggy loved to travel, both throughout the United States and internationally. Many of her travels included trips throughout the US to visit her cousins. She loved to talk about her travels but also to hear about where others had visited.

Peggy worked as a Compliance Officer for the Internal revenue Service for 45 years, where she made many life-long friends.

Peggy was always kind and compassionate, fierce and loyal. She was just as excited for her family and friends’ accomplishments as she was her own. She always had a smile, which was a bright light to those at the Hospice House as they cared for her in her final days.

The family would especially like to thank the staff of Levine and Dickson Hospice House for their compassionate care of Peggy but also the family during her last days.

A Celebration of Life will be held on November 2 at 11 AM at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis. Rev. Tony Matthews and Rev. Amy Burton will preside. If attending the service, please wear bright colors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to your local Hospice chapter, Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church for Hurricane Helene relief, or the charity of your choice.
