Obituary: The plucky, petite Penny Dooley left the pain of this world behind on October 6, 2018 at the age of 67. The quintessential wife, mother and grandmother, she wasn't physically imposing, but, Herculean in character. Born in Bedford, VA, she overcame circumstances many would fall prey to-she learned the power of perseverance early in life, calling on her fortitude through many battles. Orphaned at 13, Penny was taken in by her eldest brother, Gene, and his wife, Shirley. After graduating, she worked for GE, where she met her husband of 48 years, Harold. Their love was extraordinary. The couple brought one daughter, Tracey Bennett, into the world. She married David, and they were blessed with four children-Corey, Hannah, Holly, and Jacob. As their Nanny, Penny taught them to dance and to live a worthwhile life. In retirement, she found joy keeping up with her brother, Jerry, and sisters-Dorothy, Marie, Vickie and Patty. They would recall times gone by with their siblings Gene, Leo, Charles, and Bobby, who passed in previous years. With great strength, Penny navigated a perilous battle with cancer with her characteristic courage. The story of her life would be incomplete without including her passionate love for Jesus and her desire to share his message around the world. Her love abounded throughout her life. She never limited the idea of family to blood and was loved my many who saw her as their own. We gather to celebrate the life, love, and legacy of our beloved Penny at 2PM Saturday, Oct. 13 at West Cabarrus Church in Concord. Visitation with the family will begin at noon. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis. Online condolences may be made to www.whitleysfuneralhome.com
