Obituary: Phillip 'Wayne' Funderburk, 71, of Kannapolis went to be with The Lord on Thursday, May 14, 2015 after a declining period of health. He was born December 19, 1943 in Rowan county, to the late Cletus and Ada Funderburk. In addition, he was preceeded in death by a sister, Carolyn Vasnight and a brother Bobby Stirewalt. Wayne was in the Army and the National Guard. He was deployed to Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm. After being honorably discharged, he worked at Atlantic American Properties. Wayne enjoyed to camp, visiting different campgrounds with friends to sit and talk. He was involved with his church congregation at Calvary Baptist where he was the Sunday School director and on the counting committee. His best buddy, Duke will miss him along with his family. Service will be held at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel, Saturday, May 16, 2015. Visitation for friends and family will be at 1pm-2:30pm and funeral immediately afterwards. Family will be meeting at the home at other times. Survivors include his wife of 34 years Gaynell Funderburk; son Phillip Wayne Funderburk Jr. (Robin) of Ocean Isle, step-children, Dale Bullock (Mary) of Kannapolis, Regina Warfield (Jeff) of Kannapolis, Terry Bullock of Kannapolis, and Brian Comer of Kannapolis; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Sisters, Phyllis Payne of Kannapolis and Betty Drye of Castle Hayne. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Calvary Baptist Church, 703 Buick Ave, Kannapolis, NC 28083.
