Phyllis Freeman Baucom

Obituary: Mrs. Phyllis Olene Freeman , 80, of Kannapolis went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She had been in declining health. Phyllis was born June 18, 1937 in Cabarrus County, NC a daughter of the late William Anderson Freeman and Ella Mae Sims Freeman. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. She was a 1955 graduate of A.L Brown High School and a 1958 graduate of the Cabarrus School of Nursing. Phyllis was a registered nurse whom in her early career worked at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital where she helped open the first cardiac care unit. She later taught CNA classes and was a case worker for cerebral palsy in five surrounding counties. She founded Happy Faces; an activities organization for the developmentally challenged. Phyllis was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church where she assisted in the children's church. Survivors left to cherish her memory are her husband of 60 years, Rex Alfred Baucom of the home, one son, Rex. L. Baucom (Shelly) of Kannapolis, one daughter, Donna K. Baucom of Kannapolis, one sister, Brenda F. Addison of Kannapolis, five grandchildren; Rex L. Baucom, Jr. (Krystal), Jennifer Phelps(Thomas), Steven Tilley(Jennifer), Justin Tilley and Chris Payne (April), and eight great grandchildren. She was loved by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, January 5, 2018 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Revs. Joe Smith and Mike Roper. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the residence.
