Phyllis Payne

Obituary: Phyllis Elaine Funderburk Payne, 75, passed away Friday, December 23, 2016 at Tucker Hospice House, following a period of declining health. Born September 6, 1941 in Rowan County, Phyllis was a daughter of the late Cletus A. and Ada Belle Stirewalt Funderburk. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Payne; brothers Bobby Lee Stirewalt and Phillip Wayne Funderburk; and her sister, Carolyn Elizabeth Basnight. Phyllis was of the Baptist faith and had earlier worked for Cannon Mills and a winder. She later became a devoted and loving home maker. She enjoyed yard sales and loved her bird "Chatter". Family members left with cherished memories include her daughters Tamara Elaine Sullivan of Kannapolis and Sharon Lyles Walker and husband David, of Durham; her sister Betty Jean Stirewalt Dry of Castle Hayne, NC; her grandchildren Hollie Fritz, Lauren Bordeaux, Chuck, Danny, Harley and Allan Sullivan, Brook Smith and Amber Moser, and 13 Great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 Tuesday, December 27th at Whitley's Funeral Home. Funeral services to remember and celebrate the life of Mrs. Payne will begin at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel, conducted Rev. Curtis Parker. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Park.
