Obituary: RJ Smith, 82, of Kannapolis went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at CHC- Northeast Medical Center, Concord following a short illness. He was born July 1, 1936 in Cabarrus County, NC a son of the late Floyd And Grace Hudson Smith. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, Grace Johnson Smith who died in 2007, and a step-son Arthur "Buddy" Johnson. RJ attended Bethpage United Methodist Church as long as his health permitted. He had retired from Fieldcrest-Cannon Plt. #1 where he was a carpenter with 30 years of service. In earlier years he enjoyed camping and traveling. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Mark Vickers and Duane Melton. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Concord. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. At other times they will be at the residence. Family members left to cherish his memory are one step daughter-in-law; Patricia Johnson of the Home, a stepdaughter, Rita Hendley (Lennie) of Landis, three step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren. The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or to Bethpage United Methodist Church, 109 Fellowship Ave, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
