Rachel Lyerly Cress

Obituary: Kannapolis, NC Rachel Elizabeth Lyerly Cress, age 87, of Kannapolis died Sunday January 30, 2012 at Big Elm Nursing Center after a period of declining health. Rachel was born August 18, 1925 in Rowan Co., a daughter of the late George and Amanda Morgan Lyerly. She was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Boyden High School and attended Salisbury Business College. Rachel in earlier years had worked at the Cannon Retail Store as a secretary. She was a member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church and had been active in the church circle, the Ladies Quilting Guild and the LCW and loved to cross-stitch and spend time with her family. In addition to her parents, Rachel was preceded in death by her husband, W. Earl Cress, who died in 1997 and also 2 sisters, Lucille and Gertrude. She is survived by her daughters; Pam Overcash (Tony) of Kannapolis and Sharon Balfe (Michael) of Saratoga Springs NY, her sister, Amy Fraley of Spartanburg SC, her grandson, Jason Overcash (Cassandra) of Harrisburg, 2 step-grandchildren; Chrissy and Brian Balfe and 1 step-great-grandchild, Braelyn, all of Acworth GA. Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 PM Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel with Grandson, Jason Overcash officiating. Entombment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 1 ½ hours prior to the funeral.
