Obituary: Mr. Ralph Lee Sloop, 86, of Kannapolis died Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the NC State Veteran's Nursing Home is Salisbury following a period of declining health. He was born April 14, 1924 in Cabarrus County, a son of the late Charles Marks Sloop and Margaret Ruth Goodman Sloop. He was educated at Cannon High School and was a veteran of WW2 serving with the US Army in the European Theatre. He was a member of DAV Chapter 27. Ralph was a longtime member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Kannapolis where in earlier years he was a choir member, served on the church council and as church treasurer and was a member of the Augsburg Sunday School Class. He retired in 1986 from Cannon Mills Plt. #1 with 43 years of service. Ralph loved to have a vegetable garden which he always shared with friends and neighbors and was a proficent woodworker. Funeral services will be 4:00 P.M. Sunday, August 15, 2010 at New Hope Lutheran Church in Kannapolis conducted by Rev. Kim E. Trabold, Pastor. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the NC Army Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the Whitley's funeral home Saturday from 7:00-9:00 P.M. At other times they will be at the residence. Survivors include his wife of 66 years: Neely Vennie Moore Sloop of the Home, one son: Anthony Wayne Sloop and wife Martha T. Sloop of Kannapolis, Daughter: Angela Elaine Sloop Coffey and husband Leroy of Concord. Three grandchildren: Leah Sweatt of Kannapolis, Dr. Brandon Wayne Sloop of Springfield, Mo., Michael Coffey of Mooresville and Andrew Coffey of Durham, NC. Four Great grandchildren also survive. He is also survived by sisters: Betty Shaver of Kannapolis, and Ethel Peeler of Newton, NC. He was preceded in death by five Brothers and One Sister.
