Ray Alton Hurlocker

Obituary: Ray Alton Hurlocker, of Mount Pleasant, passed away at the W.C. (Bill) Hefner V.A. Medical Center in Salisbury on February 7, 2016. He was born on March 11, 1926 in Cabarrus Co., the son of the late Barney Napoleon Hurlocker and Ellen Ruth Shoe Hurlocker. Ray was a veteran of World War II, fighting in the European Campaign. He was severely wounded during a battle in Germany. He received the European Theatre Medal and Bronze Star and Purple Heart Medals for his service. On January 10, 1948 he married Ercel Pope. He owned a furniture store for some years and eventually went to work for the VA Hospital in Salisbury as an occupational therapist assistant retiring after 25 years. Ray was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He and mom loved to travel and camp making trips around the U.S. and spending time with all the family at Rock Creek Park in Erwin, TN. "We love you mom and dad... and we'll miss you dearly. Thanks for all the wonderful memories." Survivors include two daughters, Renae Bridges (Kenny), and Ryane Patterson (Phillip); one son Randy Hurlocker (Jane) all of Mt. Pleasant; one brother, Bob Hurlocker; grandchildren, Allison Hines, Nickolas Bridges, Matthew Hurlocker, Kayla Patterson and Landon Patterson; great grandchildren Maddox Hines, Roman Bridges, Josie Hurlocker and Knox Hurlocker. The service for Mr. Hurlocker will take place at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted by a grandson, Landon Patterson. Burial will take place at Cabarrus Memorial Gardens in Concord with military honors presented by the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:00 before the service at Whitley's. The family would like to extend special thanks to the medical staff of the Hefner, V.A. Medical Hospital for their care during Mr. Hurlocker's declining health.
